Payroll Tax Accountant

The Payroll Company, a growing organization that has been providing nationally-recognized payroll services since 1999 is seeking a Payroll Tax Accountant to work at our corporate location in the Madison, WI area.  If you're seeking a position outside of the norm, our tremendous growth allows employees to develop unique and exciting career paths.  We also offer a casual and friendly work environment in a small organization but with the exciting challenge of working with diverse clients across many industries and locations.  The Payroll Tax Accountant assists in the day-to-day management of the payroll tax process using the most effective and efficient methods.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and oversee overall activities of the payroll tax function, including all payroll processing activities in collaboration with the HCM Operations Manager
  • Timely and accurately responds to and resolves tax notices for our clients
  • Responsible for all daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual reporting and reconciliations, tax filing system updates, payroll tax updates, including the oversight of all year-end activities, W-2/W3 and W-2c/W3c processing
  • Oversee and resolve reconciling items related to tax processing
  • Act as the primary company liaison with the Tax Vendors and the Payroll Support Group to develop ongoing processes to streamline for efficiency, accuracy, and compliance in the payroll tax and processing areas
  • Identify, develop, and implement opportunities for process improvements to more efficiently run the tax process and overall payroll processing or to improve controls and compliance as they relate to tax processing and filing
  • Develop a strong, working relationship with internal and external tax contacts to accurately and efficiently file and fund payroll taxes for federal, state, and local jurisdictions
  • Oversees the reporting and payment preparation process activity for client driven payments to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of payments
  • Works proactively to maintain current knowledge of all tax regulatory changes and tax trends within the industry and at the state, local levels. Transference of this knowledge will take place for the entire payroll team as needed
  • Responsible for the ongoing accurate documentation of all payroll tax policies and procedures, including adherence to current company record keeping policies and procedures
  • Effectively meets time constraints and agency deadlines
  • Responsible for other projects as assigned by management team
  • Work toward continual improvement of processes and of the overall organization

This position requires an individual who is service oriented and able to handle many different types of situations with professionalism and with the client's perspective in mind.  This person must be detail-oriented and be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy, urgency and confidentiality.  This person must have a professional appearance (i.e. grooming and dress consistent with our desired corporate image) and effective interaction and collaborative skills.  This person must demonstrate a positive, welcoming and professional manner in person, on the telephone and through email to all customers.  The person is willing and able to research payroll, benefit and/or tax issues and problem solve quickly as well as learn from their research.  This person has the ability to positively handle stress and multiple priorities while completing all tasks within set time constraints. 

Essential Physical / Mental Requirements:

This position typically works in an office environment and not subject to excessive physical demands.  However, the ability to sit, answer phones and type for extended periods of time is required.
